Job description

Duties The selectee will serve as a Senior Counterfeit Specialist in the Office of Investigations, Criminal Investigative Division. Typical work assignments include: Utilizing advance laboratory instruments and techniques to analyze evidence using electrographic and currency design technicalities (i.e., ink, toner, paper chemistry). Serving as a technical expert witness in federal, state, and local courts regarding the examination conducted, providing opinion testimony regarding case findings. Testing and verifying new technological applications (enhancing, modifying) to create efficient methods and procedures to meet the unique needs of the counterfeit forensic laboratory. Developing the validation studies regarding the general acceptance of specialized scientific instrumentation that is required as part of the laboratory's accreditation. Planning and conducting research and development concerning traditional and digital counterfeiting of U.S. currency and other U.S. Treasury obligations. Overseeing the counterfeit forensic laboratory operations to ensure safety of the facilities. Providing technical guidance concerning scientific protocols, analysis, and interpretation of evidence. Assessing security feature technology for the counterfeit currency to ensure quality standards and service improvements. Collaborating with Counterfeit Forensic Division and supervisors in developing plans, goals, and objectives to enhance methods and techniques in analyzing counterfeit U.S. currency and U.S. Treasury obligations. The Senior Counterfeit Specialist position starts at a base salary of $139,395.00, GS -14 step 1, with potential to $181,216, GS-14 step 10. Qualifications To be considered qualified for this position you must meet the following qualification requirements for the respective grade level in which you are applying. Applicants must demonstrate that they meet the Basic Requirements AND Minimum Qualification requirements as listed below: BASIC REQUIREMENTS: A. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. OR B. Combination of education and experience: education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience, or additional education. IN ADDITION TO MEETING THE BASIC REQUIREMENTS ABOVE, YOU MUST ALSO MEET THE FOLLOWING MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: You qualify for the GS-14 level (starting salary $139,395.00) if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 level performing duties such as: Performing counterfeit investigation activities (i.e., evidence management, research, conducting analyses, reporting) to assist in criminal investigations. Evaluating investigative information to produce analytics, briefings, testimony, and/or recommendations. Analyzing counterfeiting trends to improve laboratory procedures in conducting examination. Developing counterfeit forensic laboratory plans, goals, and/or objectives to recommend operational efficiency. Time-in-Grade Requirements: Under competitive merit promotion procedures, any individual who is currently holding, or who has held within the previous 52 weeks, a General Schedule position under a non-temporary appointment in the competitive or excepted service, must meet "time-in-grade" requirements (have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade of the grade for which you are applying). Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to current competitive service employees applying for a Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. NOTE: All current or former Federal employees must provide a copy of their SF-50, "Notice of Personnel Action" that indicates proof of status and time-in-grade eligibility.
