Under general supervision, operate a passenger bus or van in a manner that provides safe, reliable, and courteous passenger transportation to various destinations within the City. Perform safety checks and maintain reports/driving logs of bus/van and daily activities. Perform related duties as assigned.

This is a safety-sensitive position that requires pre-employment and random drug testing mandated by the Department of Transportation (DOT) Federal Transit Administration (FTA).

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Part-time Transit Driver is the entry-level class in the Transit Driver series. Incumbents learn highway rules and safety measures by training under an experienced driver. Incumbents must have the ability to obtain the Class B Driver License and General Public Paratransit Vehicle Certification within six months of employment. As incumbents gain experience, they become fully competent to perform a variety of transit and customer service functions in relation to the transit system. This classification does not guarantee a minimum number of hours weekly, nor is it eligible for employment benefits, except as required by law. Incumbents are considered "at will" and may be dismissed anytime.

The Full-time Transit Driver is a journey-level class in the Transit Driver series. Incumbents perform the full range of duties as assigned, working independently, exercising judgment, troubleshooting, and taking the initiative, with occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the transit operations procedures and policies. Appointment to this classification is a promotional opportunity as full-time vacancies occur.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

• Drive a bus or van in accordance with applicable laws and system regulations while maintaining the safety and order of the vehicle environment by adhering to all highway and road regulations.
• Pick up and deliver passengers to desired locations within the City.
• Load, secure, and unload wheelchair passengers and their belongings, using wheelchair lifts.
• Establish the most efficient routes to various locations, to decrease costs and times of arrival.
• Collect cash or tickets from customers and calculate change to return to customers.
• Inspect vehicles before each shift to maintain safe operating conditions; advise mechanic of routine service, preventive work, and necessary repairs.
• Respond to telephone inquiries from vendors, agencies, and customers in a friendly tone and manner.
• Clearly and effectively communicate with other transit drivers via two-way radio to arrange for relief, disseminate traffic condition information, or discuss any other road or transportation-related issues.
• Attend regular safety meetings and participate in safety programs.
• Adhere to City policies regarding schedules, policies, and customer relations.
• Enforce City rules and regulations, report incidents that affect the safety of the public, and perform other customer service functions.
• Participate in the DOT FTA Drug and Alcohol Program.
• Maintain knowledge of road regulations and safety protocols by attending ongoing trainings, programs, and meetings.
• Maintain vehicle maintenance logs, timecards, fare collection, and other transit-related information as requested by the supervisor.
• Fuel the bus/van with gas, diesel, or propane, as warranted by engine type; charge the electric buses.
• Perform cleaning of the bus/van, inside and outside.
• Performs duties of a disaster services worker in the event of an emergency.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education and experience that may provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:
Part-time Transit Driver

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Any experience in performing vehicle operation duties preferred.
• English/Spanish bilingual is highly desired.

LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
Part-time Transit Driver

• Valid California Class B Driver's License is highly desired; or
• Valid California Class C Driver's License with a good driving record upon hire.
  • Must obtain a California Class B Driver License within six months of employment and participate in the DOT FTA Drug and Alcohol Testing Program.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain the General Public Paratransit Vehicle Certification within six months of employment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

• Routine vehicle maintenance requirements, including hydraulic controls, hydraulic brake systems, and electronic ignition systems.
• Safe driving practices.
• Traffic laws of the State of California.
• Principles and methods of preventive maintenance.

• Record-keeping methods and procedures.
• Mathematics.

Skilled in:

• Good judgment, dependability, and adaptability.

Ability to:

• Visually inspect gas, propane, and diesel-powered equipment and assess problems with and determine mechanical defects affecting the safe operation of electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical systems.
• Safely drive a transit-size bus or van in a variety of weather conditions and locations.
• Read and write at the level required for successful job performance.
• Follow radio procedures and transmit information in a clear and concise manner.
• Follow written and oral instructions.
• Maintain accurate records and reports.
• Make mathematical calculations quickly and accurately.
• Deal tactfully and courteously with the public and other staff when explaining the functions and policies of the City's Transit Program.
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Exercise judgment and initiative within established guidelines.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City management, staff, the public, and others encountered during work.
• Fluently speaking Spanish is highly desired.
• Work flexible 4,5-, or 8-hour shifts between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Hours of operation are subject to change without notice.
