Utility Engineer
The Utility Engineer position is a full-time position that will be a hands-on team member who designs, reviews, and implements improvements for District Works (DW) program on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco. District Works provides place management, beautification, cleaning and technician staffing services to municipalities and community benefit districts in Oakland and throughout the Bay Area. Position Summary
The Utility Engineer reports to the Program Director and is primarily responsible for all aspects and phases of engineering projects from start to finish. This includes formulating likely hypotheses, controlling variables, designing tests, gathering data, recommending options, and seeing it through to the end. Expected to show leadership within the department and demonstrate a calm and positive reaction to all engineering challenges. Must be able to independently fabricate new parts and solutions from scratch. Checks and verifies the teams work to ensure completion to company and industry standards. This position is eligible for benefits.
The primary responsibilities of the Utility Engineer will be as follows:
Able to lead and perform all diesel engine repairs across a wide array of machinery including diesel generators, trucks, and burner systems.
Ability to recommend and install new systems and novel solutions.
Repair and replace all pilothouse electronics.
Diagnose and repair vessel media systems.
Serves as liaison between company & outside contractors. Works side by side to complete repairs.
Rebuild and maintain all pumps and pump systems, including alignment & coupling.
Interprets Laboratory test data, reports summarized results or issues to management.
Ensure completion of all logs and tasks in a reliable and accurate manner.
Maintains tools & workspace in a clean and operational state. Performs maintenance on tools when applicable.
Ensures all engineering systems stay on or ahead of best practices maintenance schedules.
Additional job duties as assigned.
Position Qualifications
2 years of Industry Experience. Working knowledge of all industry standard engineering tools and techniques.
Functional understanding of electricity and the relevant safe industry practices for working around it.
OEM-level craftsmanship of parts and system design.
HAZWOPER certificate (40 hours)
Forklift Certification.
CPR & First Aid Certification.
Welding, Brazing, Soldering, metal work experience.
Proven project management skills.
Ability to make decisions under pressure and with little guidance.
Strong mentoring and management skills with experience working as a marine mechanic a plus.
Mastery of all Hybrid Propulsion Systems, pipe, pipefitting, and fluid control systems.

$47.00 - $49.00 per hour
