Job Description

Under immediate supervision, the 2904 Human Services Technician assists Social Workers and Protective Services Workers in the Family and Children's Services program. The 2904 provides court ordered transportation for children involved in the child welfare system. These court ordered services include transportation to medical appointments, therapy and visitation with parents. Human Services Technicians also help the Protective Services Workers and families. This position will require on-call rotations with other managers after-hours and on weekends.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS

According to Civil Service Commission Rule 109, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job class and are not intended to be an inclusive list; may include additional duties as assigned.

1. Transport children to and from appointments and visits, both inside and outside of San Francisco.

2. Accompany and assist Protective Services Workers with field and court activities.

3. Supervise visits between parents and children at the HSA office or other locations that the PSW designates

4. Carry items and/or small children weighing up to 40 lbs.

5. Responsible for becoming familiar with locations and best routes

6. Reserving and using City Cars in accordance with Departmental policies and procedures

7. Make age-appropriate travel preparations for each child, e.g. car seats

8. Transport case material and/or deliver legal notices, requests, and retrieve records.

9. Consult with professional staff regarding casework and recommend casework services.

10. Enter reports of the contacts on the appropriate forms and in the CWS/CMS database.

11. Assist in maintaining client case records by ensuring they are correctly filed, identifying and obtaining missing documents, filing new materials and updating standard forms.

12. Act as case aide to assist social work staff by performing home and collateral visits to gather information, obtain medical, school and legal records and by other methods; prepare documentation of these activities.

13. Attend mandated trainings to enhance skill sets in working with children and families.

Qualifications

Experience:

One (1) year of experience in a position which has direct responsibility for the care of children in a public or private setting. An example of qualifying experience would be a childcare worker in a group home or residential treatment facility or teacher's aide or para-professional in a family and children's program or school. Babysitting is not qualifying experience.

License and Certification:

Some positions may require possession of a valid California Class C driver license and a good driving record.

Substitution:

Fifteen (15) semester units (or equivalent quarter units) of coursework, from an accredited college or university, in child development, social welfare, social/human service, sociology, or other social or behavioral science may be substituted for up to six (6) months of the required experience as described above.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience in public agency serving children.
  • Experience working with families in community or public agencies.

Selection Procedures:
