Position Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Department Manager, Lead Carpenter incumbent is responsible for providing support to properties managed by UCLA Housing & Hospitality Services. The Lead Carpenter will serve as a working lead over Carpenters and Facilities Mechanics and will be responsible for General Carpentry for preventative and predictive maintenance programs and repairs, installation of new work as directed. Assist the manager to oversee the work performance of the staff in regards to customer service, quality of workmanship, and quantity of work performed. This position is also responsible for assisting the manager as required to supervise work of outside contractors to ensure that all work is performed in a cost effective manner with special consideration to customer service and regularly changing priorities. The Lead Carpenter will interact with various department contacts and UCLA personnel while performing duties and will be required to maintain a courteous and professional manner at all times. The Lead Carpenter will perform the work of a Carpenter, in addition to transmitting orders and explaining tasks to co-workers and performs record keeping and ordering functions. Lead Carpenter Incumbent will need to operate a University Vehicle and travel to various locations for transporting equipment and completing repairs. Completes other duties as assigned.
Salary & Compensation:
UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Qualifications:
8 years progressive carpentry experience in an education or hospitality field (Required)
Skill in setting priorities, which accurately reflects relative importance of pending facility maintenance repairs. (Required)
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff members, subordinates, managers and administrators. (Required)
Skill in basic mathematics to calculate layouts and offsets and provide accurate cost calculations. Skill in reading and interpreting architectural drawings and construction specifications. (Required)
Working knowledge of Class A construction, UBC, OSHA, fire codes, construction procedures and ADA requirements (ADA/Fire hardware and installation). (Required)
Working knowledge of standard safety practices and equipment used related to the Carpenter's trade. Working knowledge of U.L. Fire Stopping. (Required)
Ability to communicate effectively through written reports and oral presentations. Skill in speaking and understanding English to communicate and comprehend ideas and/or information. Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal direction. (Required)
Ability to use trade-related hand/power tools and instruments in an efficient and effective manner. Ability to troubleshoot problems in structural woodwork. (Required)
Ability to install metal stud and drywall partitions, suspended ceiling, fiberglass reinforced paneling, trim work, laminate, build and install shelving and other woodwork. (Required)
Skill in modifying and/or adapting designs, procedures or methods to make necessary alterations and modifications. Skill in basic drafting and design technique methods. (Required)
Ability to lift items weighing up to 50 pounds from floor to waist high and Rotate upper torso. Ability to lift material and parts, up to 50 pounds from shoulder to above head while standing on a ladder. Ability to Stand, stoop, push, pull and crouch for extended periods as required to complete job assignments. (Required)
Skill with Network based Personal Computing software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. (Required)
Ability to work under adverse conditions such as humid weather and in fluctuating and/or extreme temperatures, and dirty and noisy conditions. Ability to drive a pick-up truck and/or van. (Required)
Education, Licenses, Certifications, & Professional Affiliations:
Other Type of Degree Satisfactory completion of a certified 4 year trade related apprenticeship program or equivalent experience and education (Required)
California Driver's License Current (Required)
