Job Title: Chief Estimator

As a Chief Estimator, you will lead by example and play a key role in mentoring future industry leaders.

Position Overview: As the Chief Estimator, you will be responsible for overseeing and guiding the estimating team to ensure the preparation of accurate and competitive estimates. You will collaborate closely with senior staff, evaluate bid opportunities, and enhance the accuracy of estimates while developing the skills of less experienced estimators.

Key Responsibilities:


  • Mentorship and Guidance: Assist and mentor estimating staff in preparing accurate estimates, ensuring the growth and development of team members.
  • Bid Reviews: Collaborate with senior staff for efficient and accurate bid reviews.
  • Bid Evaluation: Assist various departments in evaluating bid opportunities and identifying effective methods to improve estimate accuracy.
  • Training: Educate less experienced estimators on the bidding process, including crew size, production, equipment, material costs, CPM schedules, and other relevant factors.
  • Cost Assessment: Provide guidance on rental equipment rates, per diem, rooms, and other cost elements. Assess escalators in bids related to material, labor, and fuel.
  • Provisions and Questions: Ensure a thorough understanding of Special Provisions and know what questions to ask during the bidding timeline.
  • Risk and Opportunity: Review plans and specifications to identify risk areas and opportunities for the estimating team.
  • Estimate Guidelines: Prepare quantity takeoff and estimate guidelines, coordinating with the take-off engineer to ensure accuracy.
  • Master Estimates: Maintain master estimates, ensuring that labor rates, equipment rates, and overhead rates are current and accurate.
  • Technical Issues: Identify and evaluate technical issues related to projects, focusing on improving construction methods.
  • Productivity and Accuracy: Ensure that estimating productivity and accuracy goals are consistently met.
  • Pre-Bid Participation: Actively participate in pre-bid meetings and site tours to gather relevant information.
  • Additional Duties: Perform other duties as assigned or required by management.

Qualifications:


  • Experience: Extensive experience in estimating within the construction industry, particularly with civil earthworks and utilities.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field preferred.
  • Skills: Strong leadership, communication, and analytical skills.
  • Knowledge: Deep understanding of estimating processes, construction methods, and industry standards.
  • Software Proficiency: Experience with estimating software.
