Job description

Duties Diagnose specific problems within various subsystems and perform necessary software manipulation to restore the subsystem to normal operation. Perform system level diagnostic troubleshooting to precisely locate and solve communications failures which causes interruption to call processing. Utilize diversified knowledge of analog and digital electronics theories, software practices and procedures to perform a variety of duties involved primarily with the operation, maintenance and alarm clearing of digital computer switching systems. Maintenance of in-house communications requirements which include all communications support infrastructure and cabling to include Category 5/6 house twisted pair copper cables and fiber optic cables. Plan and determine requirements for the installation of single line concept, perform maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs to existing key systems. Utilize skill and dexterity in the operation of an OTDR test unit, hot melt installation tool and a fiber fusion splicer to clean, align, adjust, and fuse fiber optics strands and the splicing of large count twisted pair copper communications cables. Plan and accomplish assignments by applying the full range of skills and techniques in the installation, relocation, locating, testing, maintenance, and repair of aerial and buried cable lines. Requirements Conditions of Employment Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. Incumbent must possess or be able to obtain and maintain a SECRET security clearance. Duties may require temporary duty (TDY) away from home base on an infrequent basis (less than 10%). Incumbent may be required to work other than standard work schedule, such as on-call duty, emergency call back or may require work during weekends or other off-duty time at manager's discretion due to mission needs. Incumbent will be required to leave a telephone number where they can be reached when they are in an on-call duty status. Incumbent will be required to respond to trouble calls within two hours after each occurrence. Duties of this position require the incumbent to have and maintain a valid state Driver's License. This position requires a medical examination. The incumbent is required to lift up to 50 lbs. See "Additional Information" section for additional requirements. Trouble Shooting Work assignments require light to moderate effort. The incumbent must frequently lift, carry, or otherwise handle items weighing up to 70 pounds. The employee is required to work in a sitting position for extended periods and frequently must stand, bend, crouch, stoop and stay for extended periods of time in uncomfortable positions. May be required on occasion to climb poles or ladders and work in high places. Work is performed the majority of the time in well lighted, heated and ventilated areas. Work is both indoors and outdoors. Working outdoors exposes incumbent to climatic conditions of the area: such as winds, rains, cold temperatures and snow for approximately nine months of the year. Incumbent may be exposed on occasion to moderately high temperatures, dust, dirt and hazardous environments, subject to falls from ladders and poles while working on aerial cables, cave-ins and falling debris while working underground cables in dark and closed quarters, under buildings and in attics. Incumbent must take all precautions to avoid hazardous conditions and perform all work in a safe manner. Work may require use of protective clothing or equipment as authorized by the Safety Officer. Education Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
