Position Description: Our Structural & Mechanical Design and Analysis team is a high performing group executing challenging tasks for the insight, design and analysis of the Space Launch System (SLS) ranging from large structural elements and payloads to attachment hardware. Our team is tasked with providing support for various other space related missions including the Mars Ascent Vehicle (MAV), Gateway Habitat and the Human Landing Systems (HLS). This exciting work serves as critical steps in our mission of sending humans to the Moon, Mars and beyond! We are searching for an engineer to provide structural and mechanical design support for SLS vehicle development, specifically for the Spacecraft/Payload Integration and Evolution (SPIE) element office. Working independently and in an integrated, collaborative team, your responsibilities would be to: Provide structural and mechanical design support for flight hardware including, but not limited to, adapters and any corresponding secondary structure e.g, secondary payload support, thermal protection system closeouts, electrical interface panels and membranes used to isolate environments between vehicle compartments. Work with large assembly and subassembly models in support of the Space Launch System (SLS) program as well as other new and existing programs. Manage large Computer Aided Design (CAD) files from contractors and in-house activities using Product Data Management (PDM) systems. Provide support in the development, review, and implementation of changes in SLS program documentation. This includes serving as the Change Package Engineer (CPE) as requested. This involves gathering the pertinent information and documentation from appropriate disciplines, compiling, and presenting to the appropriate governing boards. Provide design support for SLS Block 1 and Block 1B activities, including but not limited to model building and production of design drawings for adapters and other critical composite structures. Provide design expertise in the concept evaluation and design of composite joints. Participate in reviews, meetings, Technical Interchange Meetings (TIMs), boards, working groups and trade studies related to hardware. Qualifications: A degree in Engineering or related field is required. A degree from an ABET accredited institution is preferred. Typical experience requirements are the equivalent of a PhD with at least 4 years of experience, an MS with at least 8 years of experience, or a BS with at least 10 years of experience. Skills and experience should demonstrate: Familiarity with launch vehicle systems (structures, separation systems, propulsion including pressurization and cryogenic propellant behavior, thermal protection system performance, debris impact, pyrotechnic systems, etc.). Experience with structural design methods, test philosophy and methodology, material behavior, fabrication methods. Experience reading and interpreting 2-D drawings including design tolerances. Experience with CREO. Capability of functioning in a multi-disciplinary team of engineers with expertise in thermal design and analysis, materials (metallic and non-metallic), aero-sciences, manufacturing and producibility, and structural test equipment and test hardware. Capability of working with external teams including propulsion systems, reaction control systems, engine systems and avionics, quality control, ground support system, safety and mission assurance and reliability and system engineering and integration. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. A proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite competence (Word, Office, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and Outlook) is required.
