Job Description This position works as part of a team within the Space & Propulsion Systems Department. This position requires approximately 75% time supporting the department with leading material evaluation projects for systems within the Department of Defense, NASA and their government subcontractors. Examples of materials being evaluated include refractory metals, CMCs, ablative materials, C/C, PMCs, and ceramic materials. The temperature range for testing would consist of cryogenic to ultra-high temperatures. The remaining 25% of the position balances facility and test development to assist others in pursuing new technologies for internal research labs and proposing testing efforts in support of RFP/RFQs.Must have interest, knowledge, and/or experience in the areas of structural composites, high-temperature materials, mechanical or thermal design, vacuum facilities, cryogenic evaluation, and heat transfer. Must be proficient in Excel, SolidWorks, MS Project, and exhibit strong initiative with demonstrated competency executing projects. Planning, prioritizing, and goal setting are key skills necessary for this position. Knowledge/experience in mechanical design and analysis is desired. This position is responsible for applying scientific concepts, theories, and research practices in creative and innovative ways. Will work under general supervision where work is reviewed for soundness of technical judgment and consistency with organizational goals and strategies. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Support the material and process development, characterization, and system level integration in support of additive manufacturing
Develop material performance predictions and measurement tests for developmental and production systems
Work in an integrated team to incorporate advanced materials characterization and modelling into deliverable products and aid in the assessment of system performance
Generate research in business and technical areas
Assist in managing research projects of moderate size from initiation through machining, testing, analysis, and reporting
Assist in the preparation, presentation, and follow-up on research proposals of limited to moderate size, scope, or duration
Assist in the development of research findings, drawing conclusions, and making recommendations
Recommend changes in procedures and devise new approaches to deal with problems encountered
Other Job Functions Review progress and evaluate results on research projects
Prepare and present reports to clients and the professional community
Meet research goals within time and cost constraints
Lead marketing and project development activities in defined market areas
Interact with research scientists and associates in multiple areas of the organization
Participate in the technical evaluation of assigned staff and in the identification of their development needs

Perform other duties and assist other employees, as assigned Experience and Skills EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Minimum Qualifications US Citizenship required
Must be able to obtain/maintain security clearance at a level equivalent to Department of Defense (DOD) SECRET
BS in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with 3-4 years relevant experience or MS in relevant technical discipline
Preferred Qualifications Relevant background in heat transfer, lab testing or related materials discipline
MS or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering
Prior work experience in mechanical testing, prediction, and/or design
Hands-on experience in the formulation, fabrication, and application processes and integration methods for metallic materials and composites
Experience in the application of experimental design principles
Experience in coupon and system level mechanical test methods for metallic and composite materials
Active security clearance
